In the 21st match of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, held at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala on 22 October, India secured a historic win against New Zealand, marking their first victory over New Zealand in a ODI World Cup match in two decades.

India successfully chased down New Zealand’s 274-run target with a memorable 4-wicket victory, largely thanks to Virat Kohli‘s superb performance. This win marks India’s fifth straight victory in the ongoing World Cup, and they remain undefeated in the tournament up to this point.

In India’s chase of 274 runs, India got off to a strong start with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill forming a 71-run partnership for the first wicket. Rohit played a brisk innings, scoring 46 runs with 4 fours and 4 sixes. However, both openers fell quickly, with Shubman Gill departing after making 26 runs.

After losing two quick wickets, Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli built a crucial 52-run partnership, but Shreyas Iyer was dismissed after contributing 33 runs. KL Rahul joined Virat Kohli and added 54 runs before Rahul’s wicket fell.

Suryakumar Yadav was unfortunately run out, setting the match on a knife’s edge. However, Virat Kohli stood firm and, alongside Ravindra Jadeja, steered India’s innings. Kohli played a splendid inning, amassing 95 runs with 8 fours and 2 sixes.

Virat Kohli came incredibly close to matching Sachin Tendulkar’s remarkable world record for the most centuries in One Day International (ODI) cricket, falling just five runs short. Unfortunately, his attempt to score big ended when he was caught out while attempting a six.

Although Virat Kohli narrowly missed his 49th century, Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 39 runs sealed the win for India, ending a 20-year wait for a World Cup victory over New Zealand.

Shami’s Five-Wicket Haul Restricts New Zealand

Earlier, in the toss, Indian captain Rohit Sharma decided to have the visiting team bat first. The opening moments saw Devon Conway dismissed without adding any runs, while Mohammed Shami clean bowled Will Young. With the score at 19 for 2, a remarkable partnership of 159 runs blossomed between Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell.

Rachin Ravindra played a pivotal role, crafting an innings of 75 runs from 87 balls, which featured 6 fours and 1 six. Daryl Mitchell, holding strong at the other end, went on to score a sensational century, amassing 130 runs from 127 balls, including 9 fours and 5 sixes.

In his comeback match, Shami delivered a memorable five-wicket performance, disrupting New Zealand’s progress after a formidable 159-run partnership between Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra (75 off 87). Mohammed Siraj, opening the bowling for India, executed a brilliant catch by dismissing Devon Conway for a duck. Shami followed this with his very first delivery, which bowled Will Young (17), moving in sharply.

Additionally, Kuldeep Yadav secured 2 wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj each claimed 1 wicket.

Shami delivered an outstanding performance with the ball, making crucial strikes early on and spearheading India’s comeback in the final moments of the game. Meanwhile, Kohli showcased his expertise with the bat, skillfully steering India’s pursuit of victory.

In the New Zealand camp, Mitchell’s outstanding century stole the show, and Ravindra’s remarkable 75 runs were equally impressive.
