Yesterday’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad saw the Gujarat Titans (GT) emerge victorious over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by five wickets. The Gujarat Titans got off to a blazing start in their chase of 179, racing to 65/1 at the end of the powerplay. Wriddhiman Saha welcomed Impact Player Tushar Deshpande with a six and a four, but was dismissed for 25 off 16 by Rajvardhan Hangargekar. Shubman Gill, however, continued his impressive form and reached yet another half-century. He lifted Deshpande for a six over wide mid-on and rotated the strike well.
Gill and Sai Sudharsan, who replaced Kane Williamson as the Impact Player after the latter’s injury, added 53 runs for the second wicket before Sudharsan was dismissed for 22 off 17. He nicked a short delivery from Hangargekar to MS Dhoni behind the stumps. Despite the loss of wickets, the Gujarat Titans continued their chase and eventually secured a thrilling victory.
However, in the very next over, Shubman Gill made an impressive comeback and struck Ravindra Jadeja for a four and a six off consecutive deliveries, quickly reaching his half-century. Gill’s performance was instrumental in the Gujarat Titans’ successful run chase.
Ravindra Jadeja’s impressive bowling performance kept Chennai in the game, as he cleaned up Hardik Pandya (8) with a delivery that the GT skipper missed while attempting a sweep shot. Shubman Gill’s excellent knock came to an end when he toe-ended a pull shot off Tushar Deshpande to deep midwicket.
However, Vijay Shankar played a crucial innings, contributing a handy 27 off 21 before Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia provided the final flourish to secure a thrilling victory for the Gujarat Titans.
CSK Score 178/7 with the Brilliance of Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad played a spectacular innings, hitting four fours and nine sixes, to help Chennai post a competitive score on the board. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Gaikwad’s brilliant hitting kept the momentum going for CSK.
After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Mohammad Shami provided GT with a crucial breakthrough, getting Devon Conway (1) out with a full delivery that angled in from around the wicket. It was Shami’s 100th IPL wicket.
Gaikwad continued his aggressive approach, taking on Josh Little in the fourth over and smashing him for a six and a four off consecutive deliveries. Moeen Ali also joined the party, hitting Shami for 17 runs in the fifth over.
In the last over of the powerplay, Moeen Ali, who took on Mohammad Shami, got an lbw decision against Rashid overturned, but Rashid dismissed him as he nicked an attempted big hit to the keeper.
Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad carried on in impressive fashion, smashing Josh Little for a six and a four off consecutive deliveries in the fourth over. He continued to dominate the Gujarat bowlers, reaching his half-century in just 23 balls and smashing three sixes in an over off Alzarri Joseph.
However, Ambati Rayudu’s poor stroke led to his wicket, as he was cleaned up by Little while going for a wild slog.
Although Gaikwad looked set to take Chennai to a massive total, he was caught off a high full toss by Joseph as he attempted another big hit. Jadeja (1) also perished in the same over, flicking the Gujarat pacer straight to deep midwicket. Overall, Gaikwad slammed four fours and nine sixes, providing a brilliant display of clean hitting as Chennai scored 178/7 despite losing wickets at regular intervals.
Shivam Dube found it hard to find his rhythm during his innings, as he struggled to get going. He did manage to hit a six off Shami but unfortunately, he fell on the next ball for 19 runs off 18 balls.
CSK captain MS Dhoni played a crucial role towards the end of the innings, contributing a quickfire 14 runs off just seven deliveries. He hit a four and a six in the final over bowled by Little, providing a much-needed boost to Chennai’s score.
